1 -
Dissolve the yeast in room temperature milk, combine it with the flour, orange zest, and sugar in a large bowl, and mix with a fork
2 -
Add the egg, the vegetable oil, and finally the salt. Knead until you obtain a smooth and non-sticky dough. If it becomes too firm, add a little bit more milk
3 -
Let it rise covered for 3 hours. Once risen, divide into small portions (with these quantities you will get about 4 large ones). Knead each portion, folding it onto itself to give it the classic lemon shape, it should have a roundish shape with two elongated corners, then let them rise in the turned off oven for another 40/50 minutes
Tip:
The rising times vary quite a bit depending on the room temperature. If the maritozzi don't rise enough during the second rising, feel free to extend the waiting time by 10/20 minutes
4 -
Prepare the whipped cream by adding sugar to fresh liquid cream and whisking with an electric whisk until it becomes perfectly solid. Once ready, place it in the fridge to rest
5 -
After the second proofing, mix one egg yolk with a tablespoon of cream (or milk) and brush the maritozzi, which will be well risen, being careful not to crush them. Then, bake them at 180 degrees Celsius for 25 minutes
6 -
Once ready, let them cool down, then cut them in half and fill them with whipped cream. Serve them with a generous dusting of powdered sugar
Cost
It's really a simple and affordable dessert, each portion costs around one euro
Health
It all depends on you, most of the fat comes from cream, so fill them according to how much you care about your swimsuit test
