A dessert originating from the Middle East, it is very rich in ingredients that evoke the flavors of bygone times. A bit laborious to prepare, but it's worth it if you want to impress your guests
Put the butter in a saucepan and melt it over low heat. Once completely melted, set it aside to cool
2
Chop the almonds, walnuts, and cinnamon together. Also, chop the pistachios and set them aside; they will be used for the final decoration
Tip:
The choice of dried fruit filling depends on personal preferences. I really like pistachios, but making the filling solely with them would be prohibitively expensive
3
Using a kitchen brush, butter the bottom of a large tray that is the size of the phyllo dough sheets, then layer 4 sheets of phyllo dough, one at a time, making sure to butter each layer
4
Cover the phyllo dough with the ground dried fruit mixture, then add two more buttered phyllo dough sheets and continue alternating layers until you have used up all the dried fruit. Leave at least 4 sheets of phyllo dough for the top layer
5
Cut into diamonds and bake at 160 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes
6
Put a saucepan on the heat with water and sugar. When the sugar has dissolved, add the honey and cook for at least 45 minutes
7
Remove from the oven and let it cool until the syrup is ready. Once ready, pour it hot over the baklava. Let it rest for at least 3 or 4 hours at room temperature so that the syrup is completely absorbed
Cost
It's a festive dessert, so it can't be considered budget-friendly. The abundance of dried fruits adds to the cost
Health
It contains a lot of butter and sugar, and don't be misled into thinking that dried fruit is as healthy as fresh fruit. Be content with just one serving
